Course overview

Objectives Describe risks associated with post resuscitation care and how to identify patients who are decompensating Identify the two primary types of strokes and the signs and symptoms associated with stroke Content Shock Poor Perfusion 1 Results from inadequate delivery of oxygenated blood to body tissues 2 Can be a result of Severe bleeding or loss of fluid from the body Failure of the heart to pump enough oxygenated blood Abnormal dilation of the blood vessels 3 Signs and symptoms Extreme thirst Restlessness anxiety Rapid weak pulse Rapid shallow respirations Mental status changes Pale cool moist skin Decreased blood pressure late sign 4 Patient assessment Complete a scene size up Perform a primary assessment Obtain a relevant history Perform a secondary assessment Perform a reassessment 5 Management Manual in line spinal stabilization as needed Comfort calm and reassure the patient while awaiting additional EMS resources Do not give food or drink Airway control including adjuncts Breathing Oxygen administration high concentration Assist ventilation as needed Circulation Attempt to control obvious uncontrolled external bleeding Position patient appropriately for all ages Keep patient warm attempt to maintain normal body temperature Treat any additional injuries that may be present Stroke 1 Causes Hemorrhage Clot 2 Assessment findings and symptoms Confused dizzy weak Decreasing or increasing level of consciousness Combative uncooperative or restless Facial droop inability to swallow tongue deviation Double vision or blurred vision Difficulty speaking or absence of speech Decreased or absent movement of one or more extremities Headache Decreased or absent sensation in one or more extremities or other areas of the body Coma 3 Management of patient with stroke assessment findings or symptoms Scene safety and PPE ABCs and positioning Oxygen and suction Emotional support
