Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) is a rare, immune-mediated peripheral nerve disease characterized by progressive sensorimotor neuropathy (van Doorn et al, 2024). Patients with typical CIDP experience symmetric muscle weakness, sensory disturbances in the limbs, and reduction or loss of deep tendon reflexes. Other variants exist with differing clinical presentations. Patients with CIDP experience significant impacts of functioning and quality of life (Quint et al, 2025). While early diagnosis and treatment initiation may reduce the risk of permanent disability resulting from irreversible axonal damage, timely diagnosis is complicated by highly variable clinical presentations. In order to optimize outcomes for their patients, it is crucial for members of the interdisciplinary care team to remain up to date on advances in diagnostic criteria and tests; treatment approaches with immunoglobulin, corticosteroids, plasma exchange, and other therapies; and strategies for tailoring therapeutic selection to each patients individual situation (van Doorn et al, 2024). In this activity, Karissa Gable, MD, Professor of Neurology at Duke University Medical Center, will explore strategies for improved detection and individualized management to enhance the patient journey in CIDP.
