Gabapentin is FDA-approved for postherpetic neuralgia in adults, for adjunctive therapy in the treatment of partial onset seizures, with and without secondary generalization, in adults and pediatric patients 3 years and older with epilepsy. The dosage and frequency of dosing depend on the condition being treated, the patient's age, and other factors. It is not a federally controlled substance, but multiple states have enacted rules to monitor its use due to concerns. Currently, widespread off-label prescribing has led to inconsistent monitoring and limited awareness of formulation differences. Scientists are also questioning the efficacy and safety of gabapentin. This has resulted in variable state regulations regarding gabapentin.
