Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are part of a growing global epidemic that impacts individuals and communities. Millions of people in the United States are diagnosed with an STI each year, which affects individual health, the local economy, and burdens the healthcare system. Nurses in every setting may encounter patients who have an STI or who are at high risk of acquiring one. In 2021, the CDC released new STI screening and treatment guidelines based on data and evidence-based recommendations. This course will review the most prevalent STIs and their risk factors, outline current screening and diagnostic guidelines, identify health implications, and review current treatment recommendations and nursing interventions to promote optimal outcomes.
