Course overview

At the conclusion of this program, participants will: 1. Describe at least two cognitive changes associated with normal brain aging; 2. Describe at least two physical changes associated with normal aging; 3. Describe at least two potentially treatable conditions that may produce symptoms of dementia; 4. Explain why age should not determine whether there should be evaluation for treatable causes for symptoms of dementia; 5. Describe at least two cognitive symptoms that should not be considered normal aging; 6. Explain at least two reasons why obtaining a quality diagnosis in the early stage of Alzheimer's disease or related disorder is critical to optimizing the course of the disease; 7. Describe at least three components of a neurocognitive evaluation; 8. Define "mixed dementia"; 9. Describe the estimated prevalence of metabolic syndrome in the U.S.; 10. Describe how standard, routine cognitive screening can facilitate early diagnosis and early intervention.
