Learn moreCourse overview
Decision fatigue is a predictable cognitive response to sustained decision making demands in nursing practice. Nurses are required to make frequent clinical judgments under time pressure, high acuity, interruptions, and emotional stress. When cognitive demands exceed recovery capacity, decision fatigue may occur, increasing the risk for impaired judgment, delayed prioritization, and patient safety concerns. This course provides an evidence based overview of decision fatigue in nursing. Learners will review the definition of decision fatigue and distinguish it from burnout and general fatigue. Contributing factors such as high decision volume, interruptions, documentation burden, cognitive load, circadian rhythm disruption, and system design are examined. Ethical and legal considerations are discussed with emphasis on decision fatigue as a foreseeable system level risk. Through case based examples, learners will explore how decision fatigue affects clinical judgment across practice settings. Evidence based strategies to reduce decision fatigue are presented, including cognitive offloading, standardized workflows, decision support tools, and realistic recovery strategies. This course supports nurses in recognizing decision fatigue and applying strategies to promote safe, effective, and sustainable nursing practice.
