Course overview

This is a 2-hour on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in occupational and physical therapy, a topic that is rapidly transforming the landscape of rehabilitation (view-on-demand, recorded webinar). Whether you are completely new to AI or just beginning to explore its potential, this training is designed to meet you at an introductory level and build your confidence. Together, we will define core AI concepts and break down key terms like machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision, all in the context of OT and PT. You will discover real AI-powered tools that are already being used to support therapists, along with practical applications to enhance patient engagement, remote monitoring, and individualized care. We will also touch on important ethical considerations, such as privacy and data bias, and discuss the impact of AI on our own cognitive skills as clinicians. Most importantly, you will walk away with clinical takeaways you can begin using immediately, ideas and tools you can integrate into your practice immediately after this course. At the end of this course, you will be able to (1) define AI and distinguish between key concepts such as machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision within the context of rehabilitation, (2) identify at least three AI-powered tools or platforms currently available to support occupational and physical therapy practice, (3) list at least three practical applications of AI in occupational and physical therapy settings (4) identify ways AI can enhance patient engagement, enable remote monitoring, and support the development of individualized home programs in OT and PT, (5) list ethical considerations related to the use of AI in clinical practice, including privacy concerns and data bias, and (6) identify the potential impact of relying on AI tools on clinicians' and clients' cognitive skills. This distance-learning, independent format is offered at 0.2 CEUs, Introductory Level, OT Service Delivery, Professional Issues, and targeted to introductory- to intermediate-level therapists across all pediatric environments. The course instructor, Aditi Mehra, DHSc, OTR/L, received her Bachelors in in Occupational Therapy from Western Michigan University in 1998 and her Doctorate in Health Sciences from Midwestern University, Illinois, in 2016. Since then, she has practiced as a pediatric OT in various settings such as early intervention, hand therapy, NICU, inpatient/outpatient rehabilitation, and schools. During her doctoral studies, Dr. Mehra pursued a certification in Applied Behavior Analysis to improve and enhance collaboration within multidisciplinary teams. Once she delved deeper into this field, she discovered Fit Learning, an academic program based on the principles of ABA designed to build fluency and address all differences in learning (executive functioning, ADHD. etc.). Dr. Mehra is currently the Director of Fit Learning Labs in the Chicagoland area and continues to practice OT in both schools and private teletherapy services. She is passionate about Interpersonal Education and strives to foster multidisciplinary collaboration among OTs and other allied health professionals. She provides continuing education presentations for various allied health groups in her community and is an avid blogger for Psychology Today.
