Neurotheology in Mental Health: Applying Brain-based Principles for Resilience, Recovery, and Human Flourishing

Course overview

Neurotheology has gained notoriety lately within academic research since it infuses faith and an understanding of the brain and its development and maintenance. In this workshop, psychologists, licensed mental health professionals, medical personnel, and ministry leaders will define what neuroplasticity is and what neuro-theologians (such as Jim Wilder) and neuroscientists (like Curt Thompson) have said about it. Participants will explore the impact of faith-based counseling with willing Christian clients and patients on the brain through the process of neuroplasticity to enhance mental and cognitive health. Furthermore, participants will review the relevant research that examines the impact of Christian faith on mental and cognitive health and examining resources to help attendees learn more about this topic and how to disseminate this information to clients and patients. This workshop has both clinical and research-based relevance for military personnel, veterans, and military chaplains who must deal with persons experiencing traumatic brain injury.
