Course overview

An important outgrowth of the positive psychology movement has been the relatively recent focus on flourishing throughout the human lifespan. Many of the dimensions of flourishing are reflected in models of recovery from addiction and other mental disorders. Psychologists and other mental health and medical professionals can benefit by integrating perspectives of flourishing and recovery on behalf of the recipients of their care. This session reviews primary definitions and components of flourishing and recovery in an attempt to clarify areas of consensus between them. From this review, key targets of intervention are identified, consistent with evidence-based principles of recovery. Pathways for cultivating both flourishing and recovery are discussed in the context of holistic processes known to lead to biopsychosociospiritual well-being. The session concludes with unique applications of biblical principles when working with care recipients desiring Christian integration.
