Traumatic Memory: Tools for Helping Clients Tolerate and Integrate the Past

Course overview

Recent advances in neuroscience have greatly increased our understanding of how traumatic memories are formed, stored, and expressed in both the brain and the body. This knowledge has fueled the development of numerous therapeutic approaches to help clients process and integrate these memories safely and effectively. This workshop for licensed mental health professionals, medical personnel, and ministry leaders will review the neurobiological mechanisms underlying traumatic memory and the impact on mental, physical, and relational health. Participants will explore evidence-based and emerging therapeutic techniques designed to help clients tolerate distressing memories, regulate emotions and the central nervous system, and reduce intrusive recollections and triggers. Techniques covered will include EMDR, Somatic Experiencing, Brainspotting, and other innovative interventions, while also emphasizing the foundational principles of trauma therapy, including establishing client safety, building trust, and maintaining a strong therapeutic alliance. Attendees will gain practical tools and frameworks for integrating these approaches into trauma-informed clinical practice.
