Course overview

This 2-hour, view-on-demand, recorded webinar provides pediatric occupational therapy practitioners with an evidence-based overview of the therapeutic use of whole-body vibration (WBV) plates in clinical practice. Participants will learn the effects of WBV on the sensory system; specifically vestibular, proprioceptive, and tactile systems, as well as neuromuscular systems in pediatric clients. Participants will be able to identify appropriate clinical indications and contraindications for its use. This webinar addresses essential safety considerations and precautions when implementing WBV interventions with children and examines functional occupational therapy activities including interventions targeting postural control, attention, and self-regulation. Evidence-based parameters such as frequency, duration, positioning, and therapeutic intent are reviewed to support safe, effective, and occupation-based integration of whole-body vibration within pediatric occupational therapy practice. At the end of this course, you will be able to (1) list three effects of whole-body vibration on the sensory, vestibular, proprioceptive, and neuromuscular systems in pediatric clients; (2) identify clinical indications and contraindications for the therapeutic use of whole-body vibration plates in pediatric occupational therapy practice; (3) list three safety considerations and precautions necessary when implementing whole-body vibration interventions with children, (4) identify three functional occupational therapy activities that may be supported through the use of whole-body vibration, including postural control, attention, and self-regulation; and (5) state evidence-informed parameters for whole-body vibration use, including frequency, duration, positioning, and therapeutic intent. This distance-learning, independent format is offered at 0.2 CEUs, Introductory Level, OT Service Delivery, and targeted to introductory- to intermediate-level OT practitioners, SLPs, PT practitioners, teachers, parents, and other pediatric professionals. The course instructor, Rachel Harrington, COTA/L, CPRCS, is a pediatric occupational therapy assistant, passionate about sensory integration, primitive reflexes, and early intervention. In October 2020, Rachel took over Sensational Brain, previously owned by Gwen Wild, MOT, OTR/L, in which she has rebranded and expanded into new courses, products, and more!
