Seizure disorders are among the most urgent and stressful neurologic emergencies encountered in veterinary practice. This course introduces seizure disorders in dogs and cats with a practical, support-staff focused approach. Learners will build a foundational understanding of what seizures are and why they occur, explore common extra cranial and intracranial causes, and review how clinicians diagnose seizure disorders including the concept of idiopathic epilepsy as a diagnosis of exclusion. Emphasis is placed on recognizing seizure types and stages, understanding emergency priorities, and supporting patients during and after seizure events. Veterinary support staff will also learn key nursing-care considerations, first-line treatment concepts, and effective client communication strategies, particularly when seizures become prolonged or life-threatening.
