1. Describe the pathophysiology, diagnostic criteria, and health risks associated with obesity.

2. Identify current and emerging pharmacologic therapies for obesity, including mechanisms of action and indications.

3. Analyze the risk vs. reward of new obesity medications—especially Ozempic (semaglutide)—and integrate evidence-based strategies within patient care.

Course overview

Obesity is a complex, chronic, multifactorial disease defined by excess adiposity that impairs health. It increases the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, musculoskeletal disorders, and many cancers. In recent years, effective pharmacotherapies especially GLP1 receptor agonists like semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro) have surged in popularity, transforming clinical management. This course reviews the pathophysiology of obesity, diagnostic criteria, the latest pharmacologic agents, risk/benefit considerations (including Ozempic), and comprehensive management strategies
