What you'll learn

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Identify the causes, risk factors, and hallmark clinical features of thyroid dysfunction due to iodine imbalance.

2. Describe appropriate diagnostic evaluation, including laboratory testing and imaging studies.

3. Apply evidence-based management strategies to restore thyroid function and optimize patient outcomes.

Course overview

Thyroid dysfunction caused by iodine imbalance encompasses both iodine deficiency and excess iodine, each of which can disrupt normal thyroid hormone synthesis and lead to clinical disorders such as hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, goiter, or thyroiditis. Iodine is essential for the production of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), and deviations from normal intake can have significant effects on metabolic, cardiovascular, and neurologic systems. This course provides healthcare professionals with a comprehensive overview of iodine-related thyroid dysfunction, including pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic evaluation, pharmacologic and nutritional management, and interprofessional care strategies
