Course overview

Dysgraphia is more than messy handwriting; it is a complex learning difference that can significantly impact a student's academic performance, confidence, and participation in school-based occupations. This 2-hour, evidence-based, view-on-demand, recorded webinar equips occupational therapy practitioners with practical tools to identify dysgraphia and implement meaningful, functional supports. Participants explore how dysgraphia presents across development and gain clarity on top-down versus bottom-up intervention approaches, including when and why each approach is most effective. Participants learn cognitive-based strategies to support written expression and executive functioning, along with easy to implement school accommodations that can be applied within classroom, IEP, and 504 settings. The latest tools, including functional uses of AI, are introduced as innovative ways to reduce barriers to written output while supporting student participation. Common myths surrounding dysgraphia are addressed to help practitioners advocate effectively and deliver strengths-based, occupation-centered intervention. At the end of this course, you will be able to (1) list the signs and symptoms of dysgraphia, (2) describe two key differences between a top-down vs. bottom-up approach to address dysgraphia, (3) describe two cognitive approaches to address Dysgraphia, (4) list four accommodations in the school setting for dysgraphia, (5) identify one example of using AI to support students with Dysgraphia, and (6) list three common myths about dysgraphia and recommendations to address them. This distance-learning, independent format is offered at 0.2 CEUs, Introductory-to intermediate Level, OT Service Delivery, and targeted to introductory- to intermediate-level occupational therapists, parents, and teachers. The course instructor, Aditi Mehra, DHSc, OTR/L, received her Bachelors in in Occupational Therapy from Western Michigan University in 1998 and her Doctorate in Health Sciences from Midwestern University, Illinois, in 2016. Since then, she has practiced as a pediatric OT in various settings such as early intervention, hand therapy, NICU, inpatient/outpatient rehabilitation, and schools. During her doctoral studies, Dr. Mehra pursued a certification in Applied Behavior Analysis to improve and enhance collaboration within multidisciplinary teams. Once she delved deeper into this field, she discovered Fit Learning, an academic program based on the principles of ABA designed to build fluency and address all differences in learning (executive functioning, ADHD. etc.). Dr. Mehra is currently the Director of Fit Learning Labs in the Chicagoland area and continues to practice OT in both schools and private teletherapy services. She is passionate about Interpersonal Education and strives to foster multidisciplinary collaboration among OTs and other allied health professionals. She provides continuing education presentations for various allied health groups in her community and is an avid blogger for Psychology Today.
