Course overview
As the United States population ages at an unprecedented rate, nurses across all clinical settings encounter geriatric patients with increasing frequency and complexity. This course provides a comprehensive, evidence-based review of the most clinically significant conditions affecting older adults, including osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, anemia, geriatric failure to thrive, and fall prevention. Learners will also examine age-related sexual dysfunction, late-onset depression and suicide risk, the progressive spectrum of cognitive decline from mild cognitive impairment through Alzheimer disease and dementia with Lewy bodies, elder abuse identification and mandatory reporting obligations, and the principles of high-quality palliative and end-of-life care. Grounded in current clinical guidelines and real-world nursing scenarios, this course emphasizes age-sensitive, individualized, and compassionate care. Upon completion, nurses will be better prepared to assess, advocate for, and intervene on behalf of older adult patients across home, community, long-term care, and acute care settings. A minimum passing score of 70% is required on the post-test to receive credit.
