Course overview

This program helps chemical dependency professionals understand the nature and dynamics of conflict, and trains them to use mediation as a method to resolve conflict. As a dispute resolution tool, mediation is built on interest-based negotiation theory. Its goal is agreements that are mutually acceptable to all parties involved in a dispute. In the area of managed care, the ability of chemical dependency professionals to consider all parties' interests is crucially important. This program helps counselors become more aware of their own biases and enhances their ability to work with other professionals and clients particularly involuntary clients. The skills developed should help them more effectively communicate and handle the problem behaviors of clients.
