Case Rounds: Diagnostic Strategy for the Itchy Dog and Cat ON-Demand

Course overview

Pruritus is one of the most common presenting complaints in small animal veterinary practice, yet chronic dermatology cases frequently fail due to diagnostic misclassification and incomplete workups. This case-based learning session builds upon foundational dermatology principles by walking participants through real-world itchy dog and cat cases. Through guided clinical discussion, participants will analyze presenting complaints, lesion distribution, behavioral clues, diagnostic findings, and treatment responses to determine appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Cases emphasize pattern recognition, the role of cytology and diagnostic databases, common causes of pruritus such as flea allergy dermatitis, infection, food allergy, and atopic disease, and common clinical mistakes that delay resolution. Participants will also evaluate treatment planning, medication selection, and communication strategies for chronic pruritus management. The goal of this session is to strengthen diagnostic reasoning and improve confidence in managing dermatologic cases commonly encountered in general practice.
