Course overview

Learner Objectives The Gulf Coast Chapter of the UHMS continuing education mission is to promote educational activities for physicians and allied health professionals in the local and regional areas based on a needs assessment of the members and on the UHMS Panel of Expert Opinion. These activities will improve the scientific and practical knowledge in the areas of hyperbaric oxygen treatment and diving medicine Objectives 1. Understand the strong evidence to support hyperbaric oxygen as an appropriate therapy for radiation injuries. 2. Review several recent publications giving additional support for the use of hyperbaric oxygen for the treatment of delayed radiation injuries. 3. Become familiar with the benefits of hyperbaric oxygen in the treatment of acute thermal burns. 4. Improve provider understanding of Medicares documentation standards for wound care and HBOT to ensure records consistently demonstrate medical necessity. 5. Enhance provider skills in responding effectively to Additional Documentation Requests ADRs by recognizing common audit triggers and required elements. 6. Strengthen provider competency in documenting high risk HBOT indications, including appropriate patient selection criteria, treatment rationale, and ongoing progress. 7. Establishment of mild TBI PPCS as a physical injury to the brain and PTSD as emotional stress insult to the brain, both of which can be considered wounding conditions that result in tissue damage. 8. Understand HBOT as a treatment for wounding and inflammatory or infectious conditions in the human body. 9. Review the clinical evidence for HBOT in mTBI PPCS and PTSD. 10. Interpret the studies based on the data and the two components of hyperbaric hyperbaric oxygen therapy: pressure and hyperoxia. 11. Examine the resistance to adoption of HBOT as an effective treatment for mTBI PPCS and PTSD.
