Course overview

In this course, Lewis S. Nelson, M.D., MBA, provides an evidence-based examination of the evolving opioid crisis, highlighting the pharmacologic and clinical differences between long term heroin and fentanyl use and their implications for treatment and patient outcomes. The course also analyzes the growing impact of drug supply adulterants - such as nitazenes and xylazine - on patients presenting with signs of an overdose and clinical decision making. Using current data and real world scenarios, the course equips clinicians with practical insights needed to recognize emerging trends and apply best-practice strategies to optimize patient care within today's rapidly changing opioid landscape. The recently passed Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act requires new or renewing DEA registrants to have completed a total of at least eight hours of training in opioid or other substance-use disorders. This course is compliant with the MATE Act and will address substance-use disorders and effective treatment planning.
