Course overview
Counselors often encounter students who appear defiant, avoidant, distracted, or withdrawn. Many of these behaviors are not intentional misbehavior but rather nervous system strategies, such as fight, flight, and freeze, that evolved to keep students safe in overwhelming moments. When misinterpreted, these protective responses can lead to students being labeled resistant or unmotivated, reinforcing disconnection. This session reframes survival strategies as adaptive patterns and offers practical tools for helping students shift from survival toward safety, regulation, and connection. Grounded in neuroscience and trauma-informed practice, participants will learn strategies to support focus, emotional awareness, and resilience.
