What you'll learn

Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to:

1. Define failure to thrive and understand its clinical criteria in pediatric and geriatric populations.

2. Identify common causes and risk factors contributing to FTT in children and older adults.

3. Conduct comprehensive assessments including nutritional, medical, and psychosocial evaluations.

4. Implement individualized care plans to address underlying causes and promote optimal growth or weight maintenance.

5. Recognize pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions for managing FTT.

6. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and caregivers to support long-term outcomes.

Course overview

Failure to thrive (FTT) is a clinical syndrome characterized by inadequate growth or weight gain in children, or significant weight loss and functional decline in older adults. In pediatrics, FTT may result from nutritional deficiencies, chronic illness, psychosocial factors, or metabolic disorders. In geriatric populations, FTT is often multifactorial, associated with chronic disease, medication side effects, cognitive decline, or social determinants of health. This course provides healthcare professionals with strategies for early recognition, assessment, intervention, and ongoing management in both pediatric and geriatric patients.
