Course overview

Massage therapists often work in private treatment environments, frequently with unfamiliar clients and in situations that require both physical proximity and professional vulnerability. Developing strong situational awareness and clear personal safety strategies is an essential component of professional self-care. This course is designed to help massage therapists recognize potential safety concerns early, establish confident boundaries and develop practical strategies for maintaining personal safety in clinical practice. Participants will explore common risk scenarios that can arise in massage therapy settings and learn how to recognize behavioral warning signs before situations escalate. The course emphasizes awareness, communication, environmental control, and simple protective strategies that can help therapists maintain safety while preserving professionalism. In addition to situational awareness principles, the course introduces basic self-defense concepts appropriate for healthcare professionals working in close-contact environments. Techniques focus on awareness, positioning, escape strategies, and de-escalation, rather than aggressive confrontation. Through discussion and guided demonstration, therapists will gain tools to feel more confident managing uncomfortable situations, responding to boundary violations and protecting themselves when necessary. This course supports therapist longevity and well-being by helping practitioners cultivate a stronger sense of personal safety and professional control within their work environment. Learning Objectives Participants will be able to: Identify common safety risks that may arise in massage therapy practice Recognize behavioral warning signs and boundary-testing behaviors Apply situational awareness principles within treatment environments Establish clear professional boundaries with clients Utilize basic self-defense and escape strategies appropriate for therapists Implement practical safety procedures for scheduling, client intake, and office setup Course Format This 4 hour course includes lecture, discussion and demonstration of practical safety concepts applicable to massage therapy practice.
