Course overview

Mental health symptoms are influenced by a complex interaction of genetics, lifestyle, and environmental factors. This workshop introduces clinicians to the concept of epigenetics, the study of how lifestyle and environmental influences can affect how genes express themselves. Participants will explore how common gene variations such as MTHFR, COMT, MTRR, and DAO may influence neurotransmitter balance, detoxification pathways, and emotional regulation. The training will also review how factors such as diet, stress, sleep, toxins, and exercise may influence gene expression and contribute to behavioral or mood symptoms. Participants will learn practical ways clinicians can recognize possible biological contributors to mental health concerns and integrate lifestyle-based questions into clinical practice. Genetic variations alone do not determine outcomes; rather, genes interact with environmental factors to influence health and behavior.
