Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT): Principles & Application for Pain Management

Course overview

This continuing education course provides licensed massage therapists with advanced training in neuromuscular therapy (NMT) techniques for the assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. The course reviews the physiological and neurological foundations of neuromuscular therapy, including the role of the nervous system, muscle physiology, and trigger point formation. Participants will learn practical assessment methods used to identify postural imbalances, muscular dysfunction, and movement restrictions that commonly contribute to pain. Instruction includes palpation techniques, trigger point identification, and the application of ischemic compression and other neuromuscular therapy methods commonly used within the scope of massage therapy practice. The course emphasizes hands-on learning through instructor demonstration, supervised practice, and guided case study discussions. Participants will develop the ability to evaluate common musculoskeletal complaints and integrate neuromuscular therapy techniques into individualized treatment plans designed to improve mobility, reduce pain, and support functional recovery. Additional instruction addresses treatment planning strategies for both acute and chronic conditions, proper documentation practices, and considerations for client safety. Ethical practice and compliance with the Florida Massage Practice Act (Chapter 480, Florida Statutes) are also reviewed to ensure therapists apply neuromuscular therapy techniques responsibly within their professional scope. Upon completion of the course, participants will have a deeper understanding of the principles of neuromuscular therapy and practical skills that can be incorporated into clinical massage practice to address musculoskeletal pain and postural dysfunction.
