This lecture will begin with an introduction to periodontal disease, including its identification and progression. Participants will review the clinical indicators used to diagnose and classify periodontal conditions. The lecture will then explore the role of therapeutic dental cleaning that precedes root planing, emphasizing effective biofilm and calculus removal. This segment will also briefly review ultrasonic scaling fundamentals, including the differences between piezoelectric and magnetostrictive (ferrite rod) units, proper tip selection, and the role of cavitation in disrupting biofilm. The presentation will then transition into non-surgical treatment approaches, with a particular focus on closed root planing and curettage techniques. The lecture will conclude with an exploration of emerging research surrounding the incorporation of hyaluronic acid into periodontal treatment protocols.
