Autism in Females: Recognition, Misdiagnosis, and Clinical Strategies

Course overview

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is more frequently diagnosed in males, while females are often underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed, leaving many without appropriate recognition, services, or support. Research highlights that autism may manifest differently in females, with unique behavioral, social, and developmental characteristics that often mask or complicate clinical presentation. In this presentation, Christina Marsack-Topolewski, LCSW will help attendees explore the distinct ways ASD presents in females and addresses the clinical challenges this creates for practitioners. Emphasis will be placed on differential manifestation across genders, co-occurring conditions common among females with ASD, and the systemic and diagnostic factors that contribute to misdiagnosis and underdiagnosis. Participants will also learn evidence-based strategies and interventions to better support females with autism and their families in navigating social, developmental, and clinical challenges.
