Osteoporosis and its pharmacologic treatment are increasingly common among dental patients, yet few topics generate more uncertainty and anxiety in dental practice than the risk of Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ). Confusion surrounding terminology, mechanisms, and perceived risk can lead to unnecessary fear, delayed care, or avoidance of treatment altogether. Presented with the perspective of the dental professional in mind, this course provides a foundational, science-based review of osteoporosis and the medications used to treat it, including antiresorptive and antiangiogenic agents. Emphasis is placed on clearly defining MRONJ, reviewing proposed mechanisms underlying its development, and correcting common misconceptions that contribute to misunderstanding and overestimation of risk. Rather than offering clinical recommendations or procedural guidance, this self-study program focuses on clarifying what is known, what is not fully understood, and why uncertainty exists.
