Course overview

This continuing education course examines the clinical, psychological, ethical, and social considerations related to gender identity in children and adolescents, with particular focus on decision-making capacity, parental influence, and the medical implications of early gender transition interventions. Healthcare providers across pediatrics, nursing, behavioral health, and allied health disciplines increasingly encounter young patients presenting with concerns related to gender identity or gender dysphoria. The course explores diagnostic criteria, mental health screening, developmental considerations, pharmacologic treatments such as puberty blockers and hormone therapy, and potential long-term outcomes. Particular attention is given to the importance of comprehensive psychological assessment, family involvement, and multidisciplinary evaluation before initiating medical interventions. Additionally, the course addresses ethical and legal issues related to consent in minors, parental roles in healthcare decisions, potential psychological risks including depression and self-harm, and the long-term social and biological considerations associated with early medical transition. This course provides clinicians with an evidence-informed framework for assessing and supporting gender-diverse youth while prioritizing patient safety and developmental readiness.
