Course overview

Ear cytology is often underused or inconsistently applied in practice, even though it can meaningfully improve diagnostic accuracy, antimicrobial stewardship, and treatment monitoring. This interactive, case-based course makes the invisible variability of traditional glass-slide cytology visible highlighting how common artifacts and interpretation differences can drive over-treatment or missed clinical insights. Learners will work through three realistic otitis cases that demonstrate (1) over-interpretation errors (e.g., melanin granules mistaken for bacteria neutrophil nuclear changes mistaken for yeast), (2) situations where cytology may not match clinical severity, and (3) how inconsistent medical record documentation complicates follow-up decisions.
