Course overview

Human trafficking is a serious violation of human rights and a growing public health concern affecting millions of individuals worldwide. Victims are often subjected to physical abuse, psychological trauma, forced labor, and sexual exploitation. Because trafficked individuals frequently interact with healthcare systems during periods of exploitation, healthcare professionals are uniquely positioned to recognize warning signs and initiate appropriate intervention. This course provides healthcare professionals with an overview of human trafficking, including definitions, epidemiology, risk factors, and indicators of victimization. Participants will learn how to recognize clinical signs associated with trafficking, conduct trauma-informed assessments, implement appropriate medical and pharmacologic treatments, and follow proper documentation and reporting procedures. Emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary collaboration, patient safety, and connecting victims with appropriate support services. Understanding how to identify and respond to suspected trafficking situations allows healthcare providers to play a critical role in protecting vulnerable individuals and improving health outcomes for victims.
