Pain management is a routine yet critical component of dental care, and effective outcomes depend on a clear understanding of the pharmacology underlying commonly used analgesic agents. Over time, however, the foundational principles that govern how these drugs work - and why certain regimens are more effective than others - can fade from memory. Presented with the perspective of the dental professional in mind, this course provides a focused review of the pharmacology of pain management in dentistry. Emphasis is placed on understanding the mechanisms of action of common analgesics, key differences between NSAIDs, acetaminophen, and opioid agents, and how pharmacologic interactions influence clinical outcomes.
