Course overview

The use of post-mastectomy reconstruction has gradually increased. A retrospective study of more than a million women from 1998 to 2011 revealed that breast reconstruction for women undergoing a unilateral mastectomy increased from 11.6 % to 36.4% during this time. The use of post-mastectomy reconstruction in women who had bilateral mastectomies during this same time period increased from 36.9% to 57.2%. Nurses need to be advocates for the breast cancer patient to help her be aware of all options so that she can make an informed choice.
