This training provides an in-depth examination of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting and its implications for behavioral health professionals. Participants will review the timeline of events, systemic response, and post-incident findings to better understand the short- and long-term psychological impacts of mass violence. The course focuses on the application of trauma informed and victim centered approaches when working with individuals, families, and communities affected by critical incidents. Emphasis is placed on recognizing trauma responses, delivering crisis intervention, and supporting long-term recovery using evidence-based practices. The training also explores interdisciplinary collaboration between behavioral health providers, schools, and criminal justice professionals to improve outcomes through coordinated response and early intervention. Ethical considerations including scope of practice and client safety will be addressed to ensure participants are equipped to respond effectively and responsibly in high-impact situations. Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to Analyze the key events and systemic factors associated with the Parkland school shooting and identify lessons relevant to behavioral health response. Identify common psychological and behavioral responses to acute and complex trauma in youth, families, and communities. Apply trauma-informed and victim-centered intervention strategies appropriate for individuals impacted by mass violence. Demonstrate effective crisis response techniques, including stabilization, referral, and coordination with multidisciplinary partners.
