Tracking # 20-1369563
What you'll learn
At the end of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Recognize the diverse manifestations of SM to enable timely diagnosis and treatment initiation
- Identify extracutaneous symptoms that warrant further systemic evaluation
- Implement appropriate diagnostic workup and referral protocols for patients with suspected SM
- Apply evidence-based treatment algorithms for SM in collaboration with teh interprofessional care team
Course overview
Systemic mastocytosis (SM) is a rare disease characterized by the increase and accumulation of clonal mast cells in the skin or in various extracutaneous organs. The diagnosis of SM is challenging. Patients may present with symptoms including itching, flushing, maculopapular mastocytosis lesions, abdominal pain, diarrhea, cognitive dysfunction, weight loss, fatigue, depression, mood changes, musculoskeletal pain, and osteoporosis. It often takes months to years for patients to receive a correct diagnosis. Recognition of maculopapular cutaneous mastocytosis lesions and investigation of other signs and symptoms that could indicate SM can lead to earlier diagnosis, referral, and appropriate treatment for patients. Therefore, it is crucial to take a multidisciplinary approach - involving dermatologists, oncologists, allergists, and other healthcare professionals - to optimize the diagnosis, workup, treatment, and management of SM (Ustun et al, 2025). In this activity, Lauren M. Madigan, MD, Associate Professor in the Department of Dermatology, University of Utah, will explore strategies for uncovering SM in dermatology practice.
