Course overview

This is a specialized hybrid program designed to equip experienced healthcare professionals with the knowledge, skills, and instructional techniques needed to educate and mentor others in the safe and effective placement of peripheral IV catheters. It includes a 4.5-hour online course followed by a 1-day in-person workshop. It focuses on developing clinical leaders who serve as in-unit experts, educators, and role models in IV insertion, maintenance, and complication prevention, including the incidence of catheter-associated bloodstream infections (CABSI) and hospital-onset bacteria (HOB). At the end of this course, participants will demonstrate expert knowledge of current peripheral IV catheter placement standards and best practices; perform and teach advanced IV insertion and maintenance techniques with confidence; apply adult learning principles to effectively train diverse learners; utilize tools for evaluating clinical competency and providing constructive feedback; and serve as a unit-based IV Champion and resource for ongoing staff development for their institution.
