What you'll learn

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Identify common sources and pathways of cross-contamination in healthcare settings.

2. Analyze why experienced providers still make infection control errors.

3. Apply standard and transmission-based precautions appropriately in clinical practice.

4. Recognize high-risk activities that contribute to pathogen spread.

5. Demonstrate correct PPE use and equipment decontamination procedures.

6. Document infection control practices and exposure incidents accurately and appropriately.

Course overview

Cross-contamination remains a persistent and preventable cause of healthcare-associated infections and patient harm, even among experienced healthcare professionals. These errors often occur not from lack of knowledge, but from routine habits, workflow pressures, and overlooked breaches in infection control practices. This course provides a detailed examination of how cross-contamination occurs in clinical environments and why it continues despite established safety protocols. Participants will explore the mechanisms of pathogen transmission, breakdowns in standard precautions, and high-risk points in everyday care delivery such as equipment handling, patient contact, medication preparation, and environmental interaction. The course emphasizes CDC-based infection control guidelines, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and safe clinical workflows designed to interrupt transmission pathways. Through a structured, narrative-based approach, learners will strengthen their ability to identify hidden risks, correct unsafe habits, and apply consistent infection prevention strategies. Legal, ethical, and documentation responsibilities related to infection control practices are also addressed to support compliance and patient safety.
