High Alert IV Infusions: Preventing Errors with Titrated Medications

Course overview

This course provides an overview of ways to prevent errors with high-alert intravenous (IV) titrated medications. Learners will explore the purpose of specific medications, such as heparin (unfractionated), direct thrombin inhibitors, regular insulin, concentrated potassium chloride, hypertonic sodium chloride, fentanyl, hydromorphone, neuromuscular blockers, oxytocin, and parenteral nutrition. This course will also discuss methods of action associated with these IV medications and the nurses' role in implementing evidence-based practices to prevent errors, such as using smart pump technology, standardizing titration orders, performing independent double-checks, managing client monitoring, and responding promptly to potential adverse events. This course is intended for licensed nurses (LNs), registered nurses (RNs), and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs).
