Stroke affects millions of people worldwide and is the cause of approximately 7 million deaths each year. Due to an increase in the prevalence of risk factors for stroke, nurses and other healthcare workers are caring for patients experiencing stroke more frequently. Nurses must understand what a stroke is, identify risk factors, recognize signs and symptoms, be knowledgeable about current evidence-based treatment and prevention methods, and understand their role in promoting optimal outcomes after a stroke.
