80-HOUR ONLINE HEALTH CARE RISK MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

Course overview

USF Health and the University of South Florida Training Academy in Aging is offering this 80-hour Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) approved course in risk management as one of the statutory requirements leading to licensure as a health care risk manager. This course has been approved for CLERs by the FL Bar and CEUs by the Florida Board of Nursing Home Administrators. Under Florida Statue 395.0197, graduates of a law school or Florida Licensed All Line Adjusters, upon completion of this 80-hour course, are eligible for licensure in Florida as a Health Care Risk Manager. If licensure is the ultimate goal, those who are unsure if their education and experience qualify them for licensure after completing the 80-hour course should contact AHCA at 850-412-4364 for clarification. AHCA confirms qualifications of applicants and grants the license. The curriculum meets the AHCA requirements outlined in FL Statue 59A-10.037: 40 hours related to patient care and medical; 16 hours related to personal and social care; and 24 hours related to medical terminology. This 80-hour Health Care Risk Management course is a self-paced, on-line course and will be open for enrollment throughout the year. A Certificate of Completion and applicable CLERs/CEUs for attorneys and Nursing Home Administrators will be awarded to students who successfully complete all required assignments, analyze a case study and pass a final exam. Course details: The course has 11 Units of instruction developed and taught by experienced licensed healthcare risk managers and other experts in the field. Each unit is summarized in the online text and supplemented with assigned reading from the web links to Florida statutes, regulatory agencies and other national, state and professional risk management materials. As quality assurance checks, the following requirements are in place: -Each unit contains an application exercise with instructor feedback, and self-study test to prepare students for the final exam. -Students are required to complete adverse incident reports and apply risk management skills throughout the units. -In the first and last units, students are required to assess their own risk management skill set. The final assessment compares growth at the end with baseline skills. This process helps learners to identify important areas for personal development and continued professional growth, as well as confirms the skills that have been acquired during the program. -As part of the final exam, a case study is required. Learners must apply and integrate the risk management process and principles to a set of facts from actual risk management cases. We have three cases that are randomly assigned to students. Students must certify that they have completed the case study independently and on their own. The random assignment of cases helps keep the course material current and requires students to apply risk management principles to any series of facts. -Finally, the course requires ten hours of live student participation in instructor led sessions. Instructors are nationally recognized leaders in the field of risk management. Students have the opportunity to post questions prior to the session. To further enhance the learning experience, students can access the recorded sessions at a later date.
