Rural Trauma Care: Overcoming Barriers and Resource Limitations

Course overview

Traumatic injuries remain a leading cause of death and disability in the United States, and the burden falls disproportionately on rural communities. From prolonged transport times and limited access to advanced trauma centers to workforce shortages and resource constraints, nurses practicing in rural settings face unique and compounding challenges that can directly affect patient outcomes. This course provides learners with a comprehensive understanding of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and evidence-based management of trauma in rural environments. Emphasis is placed on identifying and overcoming systemic barriers such as geographic isolation, staffing limitations, limited diagnostic capabilities, and gaps in prehospital emergency medical services. Participants will explore innovative strategies for improving rural trauma care, including telehealth integration, trauma system development, community-based prevention, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Through case-based learning, evidence review, and reflective Socratic questioning, learners will strengthen their clinical reasoning and advocacy skills for the rural trauma patient population. This course is designed for LPNs, RNs, and APRNs across all practice settings.
