Course overview

What evidence-based practice should you use? Motivational Interviewing or Dialectical Behavioral Approach? If you are trained in these approaches, you should consider using both! This session will explore the commonalities and differences between motivational interviewing, dialectical behavioral therapy, and cognitive behavior therapy. In this presentation, Dr. Kristin Dempsey will help participants learn when it is strategically best to use each approach and how using the skills found in each approach can help move sessions forward. Most importantly, we will discuss and practice taking a process-informed approach in which we will learn how paying attention to the impact of interventions can help inform our next best move. This course is useful for clinicians who have received basic training in motivational interviews, cognitive behavior therapies, and/or dialectical behavior therapy, as they can learn how to leverage each intervention for the best outcome. Providers new to these concepts will also have an opportunity to learn about each through comparison and sample application, helping to inspire curiosity about learning more about each intervention and how they can work well together.
