Bloodborne Pathogens for Healthcare Professionals

After completion of this course the participant should be able to:

• Discuss the requirements of the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standard.
• Discuss Symptoms and modes of transmission for Bloodborne disease.
• Discuss the basic content and purpose of the Exposure Control Plan.
• Identify tasks that involve exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials (OPIM).
• Identify and utilize methods to prevent or reduce exposure including appropriate engineering controls, administrative and work practice controls, and Personal Protective Equipment.
• Identify types, selection of, proper use, removal, handling, decontamination, and disposal of PPE.
• Discuss requirements for and importance of Hepatitis B vaccine.
• Identify actions to take and persons to contact in a exposure incident.
• Identify the purpose and use of Sharps Injury Log.
• Identify post exposure evaluation, record keeping, and other actions the employer is required to perform after an exposure incident.
