This course is designed to give attendees the basic understanding of local and regional anesthesia for the head and neck in dogs and cats. The didactic portion of the course will include a discussion of local anesthetic pharmacology, additives to local anesthetics and appropriate use of local anesthetics to maximize efficacy while minimizing side effects. The prevention and treatment of LAST will also be discussed. Participants will also be introduced to appropriate landmarks, techniques and complications associated with regional analgesia of the maxilla, mandible, eye, ear and neck. This will include analgesia for procedures involving the oral cavity, nose, eye, ear and neck, with a special focus on oral analgesia. Participants will also be introduced to epidural analgesia at both the lumbosacral and sacrococcygeal injection sites.
