Course overview

This course for occupational therapists (OTs) provides a review of normal swallowing anatomy and physiology, common impairments that result in dysphagia, and the OT's role in screening, bedside evaluation, and intervention. Participants will learn to identify red flags during dysphagia screening and conduct a clinical swallowing evaluation. Evidence-based treatment strategies are also addressed, including postural adjustments, compensatory swallowing techniques, diet texture modifications, bolus size and pacing strategies, and caregiver training. The course highlights interprofessional collaboration to promote safety, improve mealtime participation, and enhance quality of life for individuals with swallowing disorders.
