Course overview

This intermediate-level continuing education course provides nurses with essential knowledge and practical skills to recognize, assess, and respond to substance use disorders (SUDs) across clinical settings. Participants will explore the neurobiology of addiction, common substances of misuse, screening and brief intervention techniques, withdrawal recognition, and appropriate referral pathways. Emphasis is placed on stigma reduction, trauma-informed care, patient safety, and interprofessional collaboration. By the end of the course, learners will be equipped to identify patients at risk, initiate evidence-based conversations, and facilitate timely referrals to treatment and support services.
