Case Rounds: Diagnostic Strategy for the Limping Dog and Cat ON DEMAND

Course overview

Limping is a common presenting complaint in small animal veterinary practice, with causes ranging from minor injuries to systemic disease. This case-based learning session builds upon foundational orthopedic and neurologic principles by guiding participants through real-world limping dog and cat cases. Through guided clinical discussion, participants will analyze presenting complaints, gait abnormalities, lesion distribution, and diagnostic findings to determine appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Cases emphasize pattern recognition, the role of physical examination and diagnostic testing (e.g., radiographs, bloodwork, advanced imaging), and the importance of early diagnosis and appropriate management. The session will also address common diagnostic pitfalls that delay resolution, including missed fractures, misdiagnosed ligament injuries, and systemic conditions presenting as lameness. The goal of this session is to strengthen diagnostic reasoning and improve confidence in managing limping cases commonly encountered in general practice.
