Course overview

OTs and PTs are increasingly adopting a transformative tool in modern healthcare called, Virtual Reality Distraction. This course combines neuroscience with the legal landscape of a clinical practice. PT and OT students learn how VR influences the human nervous system through what is called Gate Control Theory to block pain signals, keeping them from reaching the brain. Such immersive VR environments can trigger descending inhibition so the brain releases its own natural painkillers, endorphins and serotonin, to actively suppress discomfort. We plumb associated legal issues, distinguish FDA cleared medical devices from consumer grade wellness tools, and address documentation and professional needs. Avoid scope of practice minefields, insurance denials and regulatory clawbacks, and optimize documentation strategies.
