Course overview
This comprehensive class introduces students to the therapeutic foundations of breathwork through an engaging blend of lecture, demonstration, and hands-on practice. We begin with an exploration of the history and evolution of breathwork, covering a variety of traditions including yoga-based pranayama, Lamaze, and modern emotional release practices. Participants will review the anatomy and function of the diaphragm and lungs, gaining an understanding of how breath affects both physiological and emotional states. Special emphasis is placed on recognizing and skillfully supporting emotional release, including how to hold safe and compassionate space for others during intense experiences and staying within the scope of practice for massage therapists. A guided group breathwork session allows students to experience the power of collective breathing, followed by a live demonstration of one-on-one breath guidance. Students will then pair up to practice facilitating breath techniques, building confidence and presence in offering this transformative modality.
