Anal Cytology: Indications, Interpretation, and Outcomes

Course overview

Anal cytology has become an important tool in the early detection of anal high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion or worse in high-risk populations. It differs from cervical cytology in several respects; notably, the relative underestimation of the degree of histologic abnormality, the preponderance of keratinizing lesions, and a higher rate of unsatisfactory samples. This presentation will address the indications, the interpretive challenges, and the histologic outcomes of anal cytology. The role of HPV testing and other ancillary studies in anal cancer screening will also be discussed. Target Audience This educational activity is designed for pathologists, cytopathologists, cytotechnologists, students and other members of the cytopathology community.
